Election Day November 3, 2015: ALL 140 Virginia House and Senate Seats are Up for Grabs……… Well 61 Are in Reality, the Other 79 Seats are Unopposed. Plus There is a Special Election on July 21, 2015 for the 74th House District Which was Vacated Back in March.

It’s campaign season in Virginia, you can't miss the signs in front yards, major intersections and along the interstates. How about the brochures in your mailbox and on your front door, just wait until September when they really step it up!

I previously posted about the June 9, 2015 Primaries here and here.

A reminder: Every two years Virginia Delegates run for re-election and every four years Virginia Senators run for re-election. This November 3, 2015 ALL 140 seats are up for election

Note: There is a Special Election on July 21, 2015 for former Delegate Joe Morrissey’s House seat in the 74th District (Charles City County, Henrico County-Part, Prince George County-Part, City of Hopewell-Part and City of Richmond-Part). There is a Democrat and an Independent candidate running, no Republican candidate.
Democrats name Bagby as candidate in July 21 special election to fill Morrissey's seat, June 15, 2015
Bagby, Lambert to run in special election in 74th District, June 12, 2015
Morrissey confirms run for Dance's Senate seat, March 21, 2015

Earlier this year 11 current Delegates and Senators announced their retirement at year end, they were:
  1. Delegate Mamye BaCote-D
  2. Delegate Rob Krupicka-D
  3. Delegate David Ramadan-R
  4. Delegate Thomas Rust-R
  5. Delegate Ed Scott-R
  6. Senator Charles Colgan-D
  7. Senator Jeff McWaters-R
  8. Senator Toddy Puller-D
  9. Senator Walter Stosch-R
  10. Senator Ralph Smith-R
  11. Senator John Watkins-R
On June 9th 2 current Delegates and 1 Senator lost their parties nomination opening up their districts seat to brand new representation in 2016, and they have been forced into retiring/stepping down at year end:
  1. Delegate Mark Berg-R
  2. Delegate Johnny Joannou-D
  3. Senator Steve Martin-R
On June 9th 2 current Delegates who are running for Senator won their parties nomination opening up their House Districts seat to brand new representation in 2016, they are:
  1. Delegate Bill DeSteph-R
  2. Delegate Scott Surovell-D
Also on June 9th Delegate Joe Preston-D  and Delegate Michael Futrell-D ran for their party’s nomination as Senators, but they lost so they must both retire/step down at year end, opening up both House District seats to brand new representation in 2016.

That’s 1 new Delegate as of July 22 and a minimum of 18 new Representatives for 2016 (2 of which could be current Delegates) just because of the retirements and Primary loses.

The Virginia House:
·         56 out of the 100 House seats have Incumbent Candidates running unopposed. This means the one political party that has been in power since 2013 is running uncontested for 2015 and will be keeping the power for 56% of Virginias House Districts.  Election Day results aren’t needed; we already know who these 56 “winners” are.

·         6 of the 100 House seats have brand new Candidates (because the Incumbent retired or the Incumbent lost the June Primary) who are running unopposed. Election Day results aren’t needed; we already know who these 6 “winners” are.

So 62% of the 2016 Virginia House is already known and it’s only July!

The Virginia Senate:
·         17 out of the 40 Senate seats have Incumbent Candidates running unopposed. This means the one political party that has been in power since 2011 is running uncontested for 2015 and will be keeping the power for 42.5% of Virginias Senate Districts. Election Day results aren’t needed; we already know who these 17 “winners” are.

42.5% of the 2016 Virginia Senate is already known and it’s only July!
